The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) will notify official prices of bread shortly, EDO Enterprise & Investment Promotion (E&IP) Department, CDGK, Raeesuddin Paracha, told Business Recorder on Wednesday. He said this step was being taken after reports of increase in bread prices by 'Bread Association' by one rupee from Rs 14 to Rs 15 for 350 grams bread a few weeks ago.

"We had asked representatives of the association to hold a meeting with concerned department to discuss the matter. However, they refused to show up in the meeting. Now, we have decided to fix reasonable prices ourselves," he added.

About reported increase in prices of milk to Rs 28 per litre from March 1, 2005, by Dairy Farmers Association, he said that strict action would be taken against profiteers.

He said that the association had increase the price on its own as when it had made a request to increase the prices some time back, the Controller General of Prices had rejected the request.

He said that authority to change the price of milk, being an essential commodity, rests with price controlling authority and any increase without the notification of competent authority would be illegal, and action would be taken against profiteers.
